Every version of this story stops one sentence too early: Kewan Lacy is back. That's the wrong line. Golding's first answer Monday was yes — rehab all last week, practiced Sunday, mostly non-contact, "fully anticipate having him this week" — and then he kept going: "Even coming back, he's not gonna take the toll of 40 to 50 snaps." Anticipate is not cleared, and available is not whole. The man on a pitch count has a rushing touchdown in 12 straight games played, the longest at Ole Miss since 1956. Four days to Ole Miss at Vanderbilt. First road trip since Gainesville, and the depth chart is not set until Friday. Steven Willis takes apart the most revealing Ole Miss press conference of the season — the Lacy answer and the but inside it, the number Golding volunteered unasked, and the one Vanderbilt sentence that means Ole Miss is game-planning a formation nobody has put on tape.

Every version of the Ole Miss adidas story this week has led with the money. That's the wrong line. Ole Miss has worn Nike since 1999, and the objection that actually made this fan base nervous was never the number — it was what adidas did to other schools' uniforms for a decade. Brad Logan says Keith Carter told Talk of Champions the counter is now Nike's to make, and he expects none. The clause that closed this is creative control, and Mississippi State has been an adidas school the whole time without it. Five days to Ole Miss at Vanderbilt. First road trip since Gainesville, and the bye week got spent on ugly tape. Steven Willis brings in Brad Logan of Talk of Champions to separate the adidas money from the thing inside the deal that actually matters, builds the defensive fix for Nashville, and lands on the one game Logan says the season turns on — and it is not Vanderbilt.

Every take this week says Ole Miss just got the biggest apparel deal in the league. That's the wrong frame. Adidas made a Godfather offer — seven years, more than $20 million annually per Brett McMurphy — but it's the third one they've made in about a year. Penn State is near $30M. Tennessee's is reported in the $20-30M range. Ole Miss didn't top the sport. Ole Miss joined a tier. And the money isn't even what closed it. Five days to Vanderbilt. Eight games left and the margin is what's gone. Steven Willis explains why creative control — not the dollars — is what made this an offer with no counter, goes looking for the measurable fingerprint behind two straight weeks of emotional-peak teams getting destroyed on the road, and walks all seven SEC lines including the one that says exactly where this team sits.
